Abstract
This article explores how drug use relates to the way male campesinos from eastern State of Mexico construct their masculine identity. Based on interviews and fieldwork, it reconstructs the life stories of men who work in agricultural settings where they are expected to be strong, resilient, and emotionally reserved. Substance use appears as a way to cope with exhaustion, ease emotional pain, or gain the respect of others. The body plays a central role: it bears the weight of daily labor while upholding ideals of strength. However, some men are beginning to acknowledge their physical and emotional limits. From that awareness, new ways of being a man begin to take shape—ones more connected to care, rest, and the recognition of vulnerability.
