Abstract
This paper examines the paradoxical relationship between ephemeral activities and the enduring impact they have on public space identity. Drawing on theories of temporary urbanism and appropriation, we highlight three key paradoxes: the permanence of the temporary, the indefinite extension of provisionality, and the control of spontaneity. Temporary markets are used as a case study to illustrate how these activities can challenge dominant urban narratives and activate underutilized spaces. Through recurrent practices and processes of reterritorialization, temporary interventions can shape collective memory and transform spatial and social dynamics. Ultimately, we argue that temporality is not merely a fleeting aspect of public space but a powerful force in shaping urban futures.
